Hometown Hero Makes it to the PGA Tour

After finishing in the top few on the Gateway Tour last year, Jason Allred a Southern Oregon native is playing as a rookie on the PGA Tour this year. Allred who graduated from Ashland High School has always been a standout golfer shooting a pair of 64's in his senior year district tournament. His next step was a full ride golf scholarship to Pepperdine University.
Jason is a great person in all aspects, he is friendly, extremely kind, funny, and he will do just about anything for you if you ask. He is also an extremely hard worker. I remember when I was in middle school; I would always go up to our local country club just to be able to practice with him and his father.
Going back to his rookie year, Jason has done rather well thus far in his career. In the ten tournaments he has played in he has made the cut in six. His best finish tied for 17th at the Sony Open last January. Jason is currently ranked 11th in driving distance on the PGA Tour with an average drive of 296.3 yards.
Jason is a very talented individual, and I am guessing in the next five years he will be one of the big names on tour. One more thing I can say is kind of a bold statement but what the heck, Look out Tiger Woods!!!!! And Jason if you read this, Shine on Bro!!

A Simple Tip

When you are starting to learn the game you have to learn how to grip the golf club properly. The One of the most common errors among golfers is a weak lead-hand (left hand for the right-handed golfer) a grip that is too much in the palm. So next time you are at the range try to feel like the club is more in your finger tips. You will know if it is because you should be able to see two knuckles of your left hand (for right handed players) your pointer finger and middle fingers knuckles. Hope this helps, may all of your golf shots be straight.

Lady Boxers Win 2nd Consecutive Conference Tournament

Last tuesday the lady boxers took the Northwest Conference by storm, winning their second consecutive conference title at Aspen Lakes Golf Course in Sisters, Oregon. They beat their nearest competitor Lewis and Clark College by 7 strokes. Along with the boxers win Molly Lindbloom a freshman from Richmand, Washington finished first team all conference with a third place showing in the tournament. I just wanted to say congratulations to the Pacific University Women's Golf Team.

Tiger Woods Wins Masters!!!!!

This is amazing Tiger Woods wins his 4th masters in eleven appearances. One thing I have been thinking about for sometime now is how people can say that this man is in a slump just because he is not winning. He has already broken so many records, and now he has one more green jacket to add to his collection. He has also rightfully gained his spot at the top as the number one golfer in the world. All I have to say to those players that do not like Tiger is this he won the Masters and he "did not bring his A game".

The Toughest Golf Course I Have Ever Played

Lake Spanaway golf course is by far the tightest regulation golf course I have played in the eleven years I have golfed. It is a par 71 and from the tips it stretches a monstrous 6,950 yards. If the length doesn’t get you, then the trees will surely be a factor. During tournament play the fairways measure a mere twenty eight yards wide, with trees another ten yards on either side. Not to mention the greens, when they are rolling, you do not want to be on the wrong side of the hole, or you might find your putt to be off the green. For a true test of golf you should check out Lake Spanaway , it is located in Tacoma, Washington, about ten minutes from Interstate 5.

I know everyone has their own way of eating healthy, from the low carb, to high protein, to less fat, diets. I think if it works for you than you should do it. However, I found a site that makes sense. It has six tips on eating healthy designed for golfers in training. They are as follows:
1. Enjoy a variety of foods each day.
2. Focus on nutrient-rich, high carbohydrate foods.
3. Consume small quantities of high fat foods.
4. Consume moderate amounts of protein and where possible choose low fat protein sources.
5. Look after fluid needs.
6. Consume alcohol sensibly.

These are my golf clubs. I play a 9.5 degree Taylor Made 510 Driver, with a Fujikura Speeder shaft. My fairway wood is a Callaway Steelhead five wood. I also have a Callaway Pro Series 2 iron. I play Titleist 680 blade irons 3-pw. I have a 54 and 58 degree Cleveland 900 series wedges. My putter is a Cleveland White Hot #1. Let me know what you think, and let me know what's in your bag.

Heading To Texas

The Pacific University mens golf team is heading to it's first regional golf tournament in four years. This comming saturday the Boxers head off to Round Rock Texas for the 54 hole invitational. Pacific will be playing at Teravista Golf Course. This will be the Boxers first test of the year, where they will be playing against the best teams of the region.

1 Hole in One - Scoring one stroke on a hole.
2 Eagle - Scoring two under par on a hole.
3 Birdie - Scoring one under par on a hole.
4 Par - The number of strokes that are on the score card to get on a hole.
5 Bogey - Scoring one over par on a hole.
6 Double Bogey - Scoring two over par on a hole.
7 Triple Bogey - Scoring three over par on a hole.
8 Quadrouple Bogey - Scoring four over par on a hole.
9 Snowman - Scoring an 8 on a hole.
10 Duff - barely hitting the ball or topping the ball.
11 Fluff- when chipping the ball you hit under the ball and fail to move it.
12 Shank - when hitting the ball off the hozel of the club, and it sprays to the right.
13 Cut - moving the ball slight left to right.
14 Fade - moving the ball left to right.
15 Slice - uncontrollably moving the ball left to right.
16 Draw - moving the ball slight right to left.
17 Hook - moving the ball right to left.
18 Snap Hook - uncontrollably moving the ball from left to right.
19 Mulligan - Taking another shot without adding a stoke to your score.
20 Gimme - Giving your self a shot, usually when putting.
21 Chunk - Hitting the ground before the ball and leaving the ball well short of the hole.
22 Thin - Hitting the ball only not catching any turf, usually results in leaving the ball short of target.
23 Punch Shot - When you keep the ball low, hard to control this shot.
24 Knock Down Shot - Hit to keep the ball low when playing in the wind. Easy to control.
25 Knocking it stiff - When hitting the ball pure at the target and dropping it within inches.

Pacific University Wins First of The Year

On March 8th Pacific University played in their first tournament of the Spring season hosting Central Oregon Community College at Pumpkin Ridge Golf Course. It was a close race but with two of the Boxers shooting low 70's Pacific fended off C.O.C.C. by three strokes.

I just wanted to let all of my readers know that I will not be posting from March 17 - 27 because I will be in Vegas for Spring Break. But don't worry it will not be all fun and games, I plan to play some golf down there to. Here is some information on Vegas.

Why is it that Titleist allways has a one up on it's competition? It is because they know what consumers want, plus a great marketing scheme. Look at the people they have marketing their products, PGA Tour stars such as Ernie Els, Mark O'meara, new comer Kevin Na, and many others, no wonder its the #1 ball in golf. Plus if you have ever played with a Titleist Pro V1 you will notice that it is far more durable than any other ball in it's category. Along with the Titelist golf ball revolution, they also have a boat load of clubs and apparel to choose from. I know Tiger Woods went from Titelist to Nike, but I don't think that is going to stop them anytime soon.

How Do You Choose The Right Pro?

Today it is so hard to find a teaching pro that you can relate to, because at every golf course their is a pro with a different sense of the way golf should be taught. I have been with my golf pro for three and a half years now but I can tell you, before I started I was a bit skepticle. Here are a few easy steps to get started in the search for the right pro:

1.) Don't Rush In - This is the most crucial step don't commit to taking lessons with the first person you come across. Take a few lessons from two or three pro's in your area then decide.

2.) Watch Them Give a Lesson - A really good way to see if you can relate to a golf pro is by watching them teach. If you can understand what they are trying to get someone else to do by word of mouth, there is a very good chance that you can relate to that person.

3.) Ask Them Who They Teach - Are they just teaching beginners, intermediate players, or other pros. This is a good technique, because if you are looking for a pro to stay with and get better you might want to find a pro who has some experience teaching better players.

Once you have found your pro set goals. Then talk to your pro on a monthly basis on how to achieve those goals. This is one of the keys to playing better golf.

Northwest Conference Golf

Pacific University golf team started up their spring season yesterday at Pumpkin Ridge golf course. The team has high hopes for winning conference this spring. They have a strong six players on their mens team. Conference will be played on April 21-22 at Tokatee golf course. Standing in Pacific's way are the Bear Cat's from Willamette University, who are two times Northwest Conference Champions, and the Lutes from Pacific Lutheran.
